BENEFITS

Knowing the disorders and diseases that can

be countered by a greater intake of magnesium

The Lindos water of the San Lorenzo spring is indicated for digestion, for stomach diseases, duodenum, liver and biliary tract, small and large intestine.
It has the following properties:

diuretic and sometimes laxative
buffering action on the gastric and metabolic tracts
therapeutic action on various physiological metabolisms: lipid, glucidic and protein
reducing values of hypercholesterolemia and hyperglycemia

It is prescribed for chemotherapy hypomagnesemia, hydrocolontherapy, diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension, osteoporosis, migraine, stress, insomnia and premenstrual syndrome.
It is also used in dietetics, naturopathy and homeopathy.
NOTE: In the specific pages we present a number of common problems and disorders that can be alleviated from a greater magnesium intake. This can be obtained by including in the daily diet a greater number of foods that contain magnesium, but also using a water rich in it such as Lindos water from the Bognanco Thermal Baths. It is useful for those who do sport as well.

CONSTIPATION

Swollen bellies and constipation are nowadays disorders that affect adults, but also children. At the source, there is a low-fibre diet and a sedentary life. The first things to do in the presence of constipation are to increase the intake of fiber (by including in the diet cereals and wholegrain derivatives, such as rice, bread, pasta, etc.., but also more vegetables and fruits), and do regular physical activity even if moderate, for example to impose at least 30 minutes a day. However, magnesium deficiency is also a cause of constipation. Therefore, to obtain the best results, it is advisable to introduce in the diet food which isa source of this element (for example, cereals and wholemeal derivatives, such as bread, pasta, rice; green vegetables) and drink a water which is rich in it, such as the Lindos water of the Bognanco Thermal Baths

DIABETES

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (mostly due to over-sugar and sedentary life) is a disease characterized by the presence of hyperglycemia, which may be due to a reduction of insulin production (the hormone that lowers the blood sugar level) by the pancreas or by the combination of the reduction of insulin production and the resistance of peripheral tissues to insulin (which can not use it, so they do not use the ingested sugars transformed into glucose; glucose thus accumulates in the bloodstream, causing a condition of hyperglycemia). It is the form that can be controlled and prevented by regular physical activity and diet, which must be balanced and provide for the regular consumption of moderate amounts of cereals and wholegrain derivatives, white meats, fish, lean cheese, legumes, tofu, foods and magnesium sources (especially green vegetables and some oily fruit, such as 4-5 almonds, every day) and also drink a water rich in magnesium, such as Lindos water from the Bognanco Thermae.

HYPERTENSION

Hypertension remains the first and most widespread risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.
In genetically predisposed subjects the syndrome can appear in young adulthood leading to an increase in the minimum pressure called diastolic; as age progresses things change: after 55 years the minimum pressure remains constant or in some cases it decreases while the maximum pressure called systolicincreases.

Why?

Because the arterial vascular system becomes more rigid as it ages. This situation is associated with an increase in cerebral, cardiac and renal infarctions.
Very often, in order to restore blood pressure values to normal, patients need to be treated with a number of medications, often in combination with each other.

The most widely used associations are composed of:

  1. diuretics + aceinhibitors
  2. diuretics + sartans
  3. diuretics + betablockers
  4. calcium channel blockers + aceinhibitors
  5. calcium channel blockers + sartans

What should I do if I take diuretics in high doses or for prolonged periods?
Renal function and plasma and urinary electrolytes, as well as glycemia, should often be controlled. They are simple routine examinations, but they protect us from serious risks with ventricular arrhythmias that can arise when potassium and magnesium are eliminated in excess due to ongoing diuretic therapy. In particular, magnesium should be measured more often than is usual because most patients remain asymptomatic until the magnesium concentration becomes dangerously below 1.2 mg/dl. Hypomagnesemia if <1.8 mg/dl

Our advice?
If you are hypertensive in treatment with therapies that involve the use of diuretics, control every three months renal function, electrolytes including magnesium, and in case they are reduced, introduce them through the diet: magnesium rich mineral waters, such as Lindos water, or pharmacological preparations.

MUSCLE CRAMPS

Muscle cramps are sudden and involuntary contractions of a leg or foot muscle. They usually occur at night, when the body is at rest, the limbs are cold and circulation is poor, or during sport activities. Those who suffer from this problem must always remain hydrated if they exercise and include in their diet food rich in B vitamins, calcium, potassium and magnesium, such as cereals and wholegrain derivatives, white meats, fish, legumes, lean dairy products, vegetables. In these cases it is even more important to drink the right water, such as the Lindos water of the Bognanco Thermal Baths, a source of calcium and magnesium, whose deficiency is one of the first causes of muscle cramps.

MENOPAUSE

During pre-menopause and menopause, due to hormonal settling, nutritional imbalances can be created that manifest themselves with a deficiency of calcium and magnesium, as well as with the reduced synthesis of vitamin D, resulting from the collapse in the production of estrogen. This leads, among other things, to an increased risk of osteoporosis and arrhythmias (alteration of the normal heart rhythm). At this stage of your life, we recommend a balanced diet, rich, for example, in whole grains, legumes, fruit and vegetables, and using magnesia water such as Lindos water from the Bognanco Thermal Baths.

PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROM (PMS)

Premenstrual syndrome is characterized by a set of symptoms that generally occur in the second phase of the cycle, with physical, psychological and behavioral alterations. The triggering factors are many: hormonal, dietary, etc. In these cases magnesium has proved to be very useful in the treatment of premenstrual syndrome and in general is recommended from ten days before the cycle. In particular, magnesium has an effective relaxing action on the muscles of the uterus, improving spasm, and is also very useful against the irritability typical of the syndrome. The diet must be balanced and provide for the regular consumption of moderate quantities of cereals and wholegrain derivatives, white meats, fish, lean cheeses, legumes, tofu, food sources of magnesium (especially green vegetables and some oily fruits, such as a dozen almonds a day) and drink a magnesic water, such as Lindos water from the Bognanco Thermae.

INSOMNIA

Calcium deficient individuals complain mainly of initial insomnia, i.e. difficulty falling asleep (Type I insomnia), while magnesium deficient individuals may suffer from Type II insomnia, which is characterized by frequent nocturnal awakenings, so that they wake up tired even after several hours of sleep. In both cases the Lindos water of the Bognanco Thermal Baths is useful.

KIDNEY (Stones)

According to the Guidelines of the National Research Institute for Food and Nutrition, people predisposed to form kidney stones should drink abundantly throughout the day, without fearing that the calcium contained in the water may promote the formation of kidney stones. Also in this case, is indicated theLindos  water from the Bognanco Thermal Baths, source of magnesium (the latter helps to prevent the accumulation of calcium deposits in the urinary tract, and makes soluble in urine calcium and phosphorus preventing the transformation into hard calculations).

SPORT

Anyone who practises sport, whether at an amateur or competitive level, needs a balanced diet appropriate to the characteristics of their physical commitment, a source of nutritional elements that can support or increased performance and help in physical recovery once the activity ceases. It is also useful to increase magnesium intake to improve performance, increase energy production, increase endurance, optimize muscle activity, regulate muscle contraction, enhance motor coordination, decrease lactic acid production, avoid neuro-muscular cramps and reduce the pain threshold from fatigue. So here too, drinking a water source of magnesium is essential. Particularly suitable is the Lindos water of the Bognanco Thermal Baths.

HYDROCOLONTHERAPY (ICT)

The use of mineral waters rich in magnesium is documented at the level of pre and post treatment integration in hydrocolon therapy (intestinal washing system recommended in the presence of meteorism, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, parasites, ulcerative colitis in submissive phase, diverticulosis, headache, gastritis, reflux syndrome, mycosis), thanks to their alkalizing and metabolic properties. In the pre-treatment phase, mineral waters rich in magnesium are used for their laxative properties, while in the post-treatment phase they are indicated to activate and maintain the healthy bacterial flora. Lindos water from the Bognanco Thermal Baths is also suitable in such cases.

ONCOLOGY

Some drugs used in oncology (but also diuretics and antibiotics), as well as the difficulty to assimilate food due to surgery or the disease itself, prolonged diarrhea, applications of the naso-gastric probe, require a supplement of magnesium that can also be contributed by regularly taking a water rich in magnesium such as the Lindos water from the Bognanco Thermae.

For any treatment or diagnosis of illness, consult a competent doctor. The daily requirement of magnesium can be found here (link) in the table of the National Academy of Sciences.

OSTEOPOROSIS

Together with calcium, magnesium is an active factor in the formation of osteoblasts, cells specializing in the “construction” of bone tissue, so it is useful to prevent osteoporosis. Unfortunately, according to some studies, as many as one in five Italians do not have sufficient magnesium levels, a situation that may increase the risk of osteoporosis. In addition, magnesium deficiency can also occur in the premenstrual syndrome or in the early stages of menopause, a period of life when a woman sees the likelihood of being affected by bone fragility increase. Therefore, taking water rich in magnesium, such as Lindos water from the  Bognanco thermal baths, is useful, along with a healthy and balanced diet and regular physical activity, for the prevention of osteoporosis: just one litre per day to get good results.

ANXIETY

Against anxiety and stress, taking the right amounts of magnesium can be of great help. This is a valuable mineral for health, including that of the nervous system and brain, known for its relaxing action, anti-anxiety and mood enhancement. Magnesium intervenes by regulating the transmission of nerve and neuromuscular impulses, and reducing the excess of adrenaline, a hormone that is produced in large quantities in the presence of stress and that causes magnesium to be lost in urine.

If you too are stressed due to work, family commitments or other activities that put you under pressure, you need good hydration, and if the water you drink contains minerals such as magnesium as in the case of the Lindos water from the Bognanco Thermae, you can help your nervous system and keep away anxiety and stress.

CHOLESTEROL

A lack of magnesium can lead to an alteration of the metabolism of body fats and this can manifest itself – especially in the presence of sedentary life, smoking, food errors and taking some drugs – with levels of LDL cholesterol (“bad”) and triglycerides in the blood that exceed the safety threshold for the cardiovascular system and the brain, but also with an increase in weight then difficult to eliminate. Researchers [Rasmussen 1988, Nassir 1995] have also shown that magnesium supplementation can lower cholesterol levels by 20% and triglycerides by 30%.

It therefore seems evident the importance of a diet that provides enough magnesium, so rich in vegetables with green leaves, with cereals and wholegrain derivatives (bread, pasta, etc.), with moderate amounts of almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, algae and cocoa and with the regular intake of water that contains in the right quantities (356 mg/l) as Lindos Water of the Bognanco Spa.

OVERWEIGHT

Researchers at Fu-Jen Catholic University, Taiwan, conducted research monitoring the level of magnesium in individuals with type 2 diabetes (mostly due to dietary errors).

The results of the study showed that 88.6% of the subjects monitored showed a low level of magnesium. Magnesium deficiency was associated with metabolic syndrome “markers” such as triglycerides, body mass index (BMI), high fat mass percentage and waistline circumference, thus an overweight condition.

Magnesium is important to keep fit!

  • Low magnesium levels are linked to a condition of increased abdominal fat and overweight.
  • Magnesium allows metabolic processes to function better.
  • Regular consumption of magnesium, including through water rich in this mineral, helps prevent overweight, diabetes and slowing down the metabolism.

TIREDNESS AND FATIGUE

Fatigue, sleep that does not refresh and a feeling of weakness with low concentration capacity are fairly common disorders in the summer months. Water, in these cases, has a vital role: our body, in fact, is composed of 60% of this element and renewing the supplies allows the proper development of biochemical reactions and processes that ensure life.

With the arrival of heat and summer, being well hydrated becomes even more important. And the hydration must be of quality, thanks to the mineral content of the water chosen. During this time of year, to ensure health and psychophysical wellbeing, experts recommend drinking water rich in magnesium, potassium, but also calcium and other minerals, such as Lindos Water of the Bognanco Thermal Baths. To ensure the right amount of these substances every day, just drink 1-2 bottles of Lindos Water.

Note: We remind the reader that we do not intend to use the notions contained in these pages for diagnostic or prescriptive purposes. ABDOMINAL FAT

Two studies, published respectively in the American Journal of Cardiology and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, have established that excess fat in the abdomen is associated with an increased risk of being affected by heart attacks and strokes. That is why it is important to reduce the waist.

To do this, it is necessary to adopt a healthy and balanced diet, rich in fiber (cereals, legumes, vegetables and fruit), Omega 3 (fish) and magnesium (whole grains, oily fruit and water that is rich), which can facilitate the elimination of fat that accumulated on the belly.

Magnesium supplementation has proven useful in reducing cholesterol and abdominal fat.It is therefore evident the importance of a diet that provides the right amount of this element, as well as the regular intake of water that contains the appropriate doses (365 mg/l) as Lindos Water of the Bognanco Thermae.

Note: We remind the reader that we do not intend to use the notions contained in these pages for diagnostic or prescriptive purposes. HOLIDAY STRESS

The holiday should be a time of rest, however in some cases it can become a source of stress. If for example the temperature is too high and there is the presence of mugginess, this affects brain cells, reducing levels of minerals such as magnesium and potassium.

Moreover, the life planned during the year keeps anxiety under control, thanks to having all daily activities planned at a precise pace. Being suddenly “free”, without doing anything but relax and rest, can bring out the anxiety hidden by routine for a long time. In this case, the magnesium is reduced and the stress state worsens.

It is therefore very useful to supplement this mineral which, in addition to many other beneficial effects, is also known for its relaxing action. The Lindos Water of the Bognanco Thermal Baths is particularly suitable because, in addition to quenching your thirst and hydrating yourself, it allows you to take 356mg/l of magnesium, the ideal quantity to reduce anxiety and stress and improve your mood.
